One of the most well-known treatments in the world of dentistry is the root canal; but, paradoxically, this is one of the most misunderstood dental solutions out there. Our Saint Louis dentists are here to help you better understand the purpose of root canal therapy. Keep reading to learn more about this important restorative option.
When is it used?
Root canal treatment becomes necessary when a patient’s tooth is damaged all the way down into the dental core. This damage may take the form of an infection or an injury due to an accident. Because the inside of the tooth is filled with dental pulp, including nerves, a patient who requires root canal therapy will likely experience tooth pain prior to treatment.
On the other hand, minor dental infections–those that can be treated with simple fillings—generally involve only the dental enamel and/or the dentin, and may be asymptomatic for the patient.
What happens during root canal therapy?
During treatment, our dental team will remove all damaged dental material, as well as the dental pulp, nerves, and roots. The goal is to save as much of the healthy outer tooth structure as possible.
Once we’ve cleared out the inner tooth, we will clean and sterilize the remaining tooth structure before filling it. The tooth is rebuilt and repaired with a customized dental restoration. Post-treatment, you’ll be able to use and care for your tooth normally.
In many cases, root canal treatment is able to actually save teeth that would otherwise need to be pulled, or would fall out over time. A timely root canal also minimizes the risk of dental damage spreading from the compromised tooth to other teeth, gum tissue, and the jawbone.
As soon as you notice changes to your smile, schedule a consultation with our Saint Louis dentists for a thorough assessment. The sooner that you are able to begin treatment, the better your long-term dental prognosis.
